Procedure

  • Ask the client to look up towards the ceiling as far as they feel comfortable
  • A client with normal neck extension is usually able to look straight up to the ceiling

Caution

  • Ensure that the client has no jewelry around the neck that could get caught on the table
  • The therapist should put themself into a position where they are able to support the client if needed
  • Pain referring into head or neck might be caused by cervical spine lesions, nerve root compressions, cancer and infections refer outicon ring
  • No resisted tests with clients who had fresh injury or trauma that has not been seen by other medical professionals (e.g. doctors, chiropractors)

Permit

  • Jaw depression / opening of mouth
  • If on neck extension restriction is felt in the laryngeal area ask your client to open the mouth on extension of the neck
  • If that increases the ROM it might have been the hyoid muscles restricting the movement
